When browsing through the juice aisles at your local grocery store, chances are you’re bound to find countless brands of fruit juices with labels touting how they are made using real fruit. While this may sound good to those seeking to drink something that isn’t just flavored sugar, some research suggests there may be deception going on.
According to a University of Connecticut study, of the more than eighty percent of fruit juices used in the study, just over thirty percent had any kind of juice in them. The drinks used in the study were popular brands intended for children and ranged from ones labeled 100& juice to others advertising low calories. Many of the brands had a mere five percent of actual fruit juice.
Even if you pay attention to the labeling, sweetened fruit drinks may deceive because the sugar content may seem lower when manufacturers decide to utilize artificial sweeteners. Furthermore, it can be tricky figuring out how much is being added as the FDA doesn’t mandate that manufacturers report the level of sweetener being used.
Artificial sweeteners can cause everything from increased resistance to insulin to high blood pressure and a greater risk of diabetes.
When searching for healthy juices, consider making your own at home or pay close attention to the label.
