The federal agency recently released a safety communication warning about the use of mercury-containing dental amalgam and how it may negatively affect individuals. Children, pregnant women are two of several groups that are especially susceptible to the potentially harmful health effects of mercury.

The FDA has been updating research literature, tracking studies, and conducting public consultations on the impact of dental amalgam and amalgam-related mercury vapor on public health for more than two decades. Dental amalgam is a combination of silver, tin, and copper consisting of mercury and a powdered alloy. With time, the amalgam emits trace quantities of mercury vapor. Although low levels of inhaled mercury vapor are usually not dangerous to most people, there may be an elevated chance of adverse health effects for these high-risk individuals. How much vapor is emitted may also depend on how old the filling is as well as the behaviors an individual may engage in, like grinding their teeth, for example.
