Sleep is essential, and the body will reinforce how essential it is by increasing the side effects the longer you remain sleep deprived. A lack of sleep will increase the odds of feeling lethargic, mental performance will suffer, a person will become more irritable, and it may also contribute to greater odds of serious health problems like heart disease or diabetes.
What some people may not be aware of, is that poor sleep may also affect a person’s oral health.
The Journal of Periodontology conducted a study last year containing data from more than 3,000 people over thirty years of age. From 2013 and 2014, these were part of a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The findings discovered that even after ignoring variables such as age or whether they smoked, people who slept well for at least seven hours or more each night had a 40 percent lower risk of contracting serious gum disease versus those who did not.
