Gum disease may also impact the body in other ways should it progress to a higher stage, possibly leading to diabetes, heart disease, and even dementia as evidenced by some recent research.

Research published last month in a journal of the American Academy of Neurology indicates a potential correlation between periodontal disease and cognitive disability, like dementia, on a minor level.

Gum disease gradually progresses, starting with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums that causes redness, irritation, and bleeding. If it remains untreated, tartar pockets, bacteria, and plaque will begin to develop near the teeth, eventually leading to decay, tooth bone loss, and in the worst-case scenario, loss of the tooth altogether.

Testing is underway as is the case with most of these studies but again, the value of regular brushing and flossing cannot be emphasized enough.
