New Pinhole Treatment For Gum Recession

Dr. Vladimir Gashinsky of Holistic Dental Center now offers The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a minimally invasive alternative to conventional gum grafting that requires no scalpels or stitches.

Traditionally, the treatment for gum disease has been conventional gum grafting surgery, a rather invasive procedure. “The advantage of gum grafting is that it is considered to be the best way to predictably stop gum recession. The downside is that may patients perceive conventional grafting to be a painful and invasive procedure, so they often delay or never schedule needed treatment.”

“Because the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™ does not require incisions or sutures, patients can have a much more comfortable treatment with minimal pain, swelling, or bleeding,” says Dr. Gashinsky. He says that he makes one or more small pinholes in the gums, then uses specially designed dental tools placed through the entry points to loosen the gums and guide the tissue down to improve coverage of the receded areas. Small strips of collagen, similar to the material used for collagen injections are inserted through the pinhole to stabilize the gums,” says Dr. Gashinsky. “Patients can return to normal activities almost immediately with virtually no pain in most cases. The procedure typically requires a single in-office visit and most patients will see a noticeable cosmetic improvement immediately following the procedure.”

“Gum recession, or receding gums can affect people at any age,” says Dr. Gashinsky. “A leading cause of gum recession is inappropriate brushing,” he says.

“There are different reasons why people choose to have corrective treatment for their gum recession,” says Dr. Gashinsky. “Many patients are motivated by the appearance of their receding gums, others are concerned with sensitivity to cold temperatures due to exposed root surfaces and decay at the receded areas. Treatment of gum recession is also important because when the gums recede, so does the bone that supports the teeth. As the gums shrink, bone is lost, increasing the chances of tooth loss.”
