The One-Two Positive Punch of Artichoke and Bergamot on the Liver

The One-Two Positive Punch of Artichoke and Bergamot on the LiverLiver disease is something that can affect more than just individuals with a drinking problem. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may be affecting as many as 100 million Americans and it is a type of liver disease that does not, in fact, involved alcohol abuse. What’s worse, it may lead to more serious issues like cirrhosis, cancer, heart and kidney disease, and even Type 2 diabetes.

There are no FDA-approved drugs currently available to treat NAFLD but evidence suggests that lifestyle and nutritional improvements, such as bergamot and artichoke extract supplements, may be of benefit.

A Frontiers in Endocrinology study published earlier this year involved just over 100 participants between the ages of 35 and 70 dealing with slightly high levels of cholesterol and a fatty liver. Separated into a pair of groups, one group received a placebo while the other was given a supplement with bergamot and wild artichoke compounds. The participants were also asked to follow a Mediterranean diet. Among the group given the supplement, liver fat was reduced by as much as fifteen percent.

Although bergamot and wild artichoke contain several bioactive compounds, the results were directly attributed to polyphenols. Lipophagy4, the dissolution of fat droplets in the body, is also induced. In a family of polyphenols called flavonoids, citrus fruits are exceptionally loaded, but bergamot, a bitter, inedible variety of citrus fruit, has the largest concentration.
