Of course, protein itself is nothing new. It’s one of the most fundamental building materials in the human body, essential for repairing tissue, producing enzymes and hormones, supporting immune function, and maintaining the structural integrity of — well, basically, everything.

Despite the marketing, protein isn’t a performance supplement. It’s infrastructure. And some of its most important work happens in your mouth.

All of the structures that help hold your teeth in place — the gums, the periodontal ligament, even the surrounding bone — depend on protein, particularly in the form of collagen. Collagen is the scaffolding that holds it all together.

For one, high protein diets can contribute to dry mouth – especially if a lot of it comes from ultra-processed products. At first, you might notice a sticky, slightly uncomfortable feeling. Over time, you may find yourself more prone to cavities and gum disease. Normal saliva flow protects your teeth, washing away food debris and delivering minerals to the enamel to replace those lost through daily wear.

A displacement problem can also arise. When you load up with more protein, other foods tend to get crowded out — usually vegetables, fruit, and fiber. Yet that’s where your body can get the vitamin C it needs to make collagen, the fiber that supports a healthy oral microbiome, and other cofactors that make the whole nutritional system work.

But if what the protein displaces are refined carbohydrates — breads, pastas, sugary snacks — that’s actually good news for your mouth.
