A new year is here and you may already be hard at work on your resolutions, from getting some more physical activity in to paying closer attention to how you nourish your body. Getting started with changing your diet to healthier foods can be overwhelming, but our handy guide may help get you started with some recommendations.
Let’s begin with salmon, which is rich in omega 3, protein, minerals, and essential vitamins like the all-important vitamin D. A pair of servings a week can do the body lots of good.
Fiber is important for digestion and you can get a healthy dose of it by consuming oats, which also boasts a specific fiber type called beta-glucan. This type of fiber may help drop your LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
If you aren’t already, throw some nuts into your diet. Along with fiber, nuts are packed with protein along with essential nutrients like iron and thiamin, both of which can give you an energy boost and toughen up the immune system. Even so, make sure to stick to only a handful of nuts as they do have a lot of calories, and try to go for those that are unsalted.
They may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but consider incorporating some leafy greens in your meals. Broccoli and spinach, for example, have vitamins and A and C as well as folate and potassium which all assist with better immune health, improved skin, and more.
You don’t necessarily have to give up favorites like bread or pasta. These foods have whole grain carbs that have nutrients like phosphorus and niacin, both of which can aid in tissue and cell repair. With these foods, it’s all about small portion size.
Citrus fruits (vitamin C and energy conversion), plain yogurt (calcium and protein), apples (soluble fiber), all of these are foods you may wish to add to your diet this year. Here’s to healthier living in 2021!
