Nitrates are compounds found in beets used for purposes such as boosting muscle function and importing how these muscles make use of the all-important calcium. However, did you know that beets may also help with breathing?
Being that the diaphragm is a muscle, University of Florida researchers conducted a study to see how nitrates may provide benefits. Using two different groups of mice given plain water and the other given sodium nitrate-infused water, the group given the nitrates were discovered to have strong diaphragms, allowing them to better clear their lungs and, therefore, reduce the odds of an infection. The news is particularly important, useful, and timely considering the coronavirus targets the lungs.
Besides potentially improved lung function, consuming beets also provides additional benefits such as lowering blood pressure, boosting stamina, and fighting inflammation. Furthermore, they’re packed with essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and potassium as well as fiber.
Beets can be enjoyed in several different ways such as grating and enjoying them raw with a salad, juicing them, or lightly steaming them, for example.
