Research published last year in the Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology It indicates that during dental operations requiring drilling on amalgam fillings, the safety limits for mercury toxicity can be surpassed if special measures are not in place, per the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT).
The study also reveals that when measuring mercury toxicity during drilling on dental amalgam, conventional methods tend to be insufficient since these methods do not account for an ignored source: mercury vapor released from filling particles that are produced by drilling. The IAOMT hopes that publishing the report would bring about much-needed and long-awaited improvements in mercury-related dental procedures.
In the meantime, dental amalgam fillings have also been banned by some countries, while others have recently banned their use for pregnant women and infants. In September, the FDA released a statement discussing the possible risks of mercury vapor exposure.
Holistic Dental Center New Jersey is proud to be a mercury-safe and mercury-free dental practice. When an existing mercury filling has to be replaced, we never use mercury amalgams and employ protective precautions to shield you and the workers from mercury vapors. At the Holistic Dental Clinic, only biocompatible products that are free of arsenic, metal, BPA, and fluoride are used to assure the safety of all our patients.
